About English Class

Hi there,
Well, this is the last blog session. For me this is a little sad, because I really like to write in english. I think that in Chile, we must have professionals with an intermediate level of english (or even better), so this subject at university is right. The first two years I spend at college I didn’t study English, I only watched films in the language, but I didn’t keep learning about grammar or conjugations of verbs.
So,studying english at this time is totally fine. I could remember the “theory” about writing in english. Now I think that I’m qualified to keep a dialogue in English and I will understand at least the 80% of this. Speaking about the use of blogs, I could say that this is the only way to work in writing. I mean, doing test in paper is really boring. With the blog, we can check our others classmates’ blogs, see how they write and what they write about. It’s interesting and fun.
I know I said before that my English is really good, but I think I always need to improve it.  I’m not bilingual, so I usually have to search on the internet about syntax, drafting and my big trouble with the english language: connectors. I know a lot of vocabulary, even I could talk with an American teenager and I would understand the slang and the American sense of humor. I think you can figure out that I consume a lot of Anglo-American culture. So, those are my strengths and weaknesses about the English language and I hope I’ll still use it not just like a receiver, but as emitter.
This semester was great, thank for sharing it with me :)

Free time activity

I did it!

This year was a good year

Well, I think this year has been my best year by far. I mean, I didn’t do great or memorable things, but I’m always being and doing the same stuff and this year I was capable to do new processes.
I didn’t have summer holydays because I was doing my professional internship, but I don’t care, because living on my own, being responsible and working by myself helped me to be a better person. I learnt about working in teams, how to behave in an office and stuff like that. I think that was my first achievement this year.
Then I started my fourth year in college and I’ve been doing ok since March until today. I haven’t had problems whit it, so this could be my second achievement of the year.
I finished my internship in June, so I was free for winter and my vacations. My family and I were planning a trip to Peru and we could make it in July. I was really happy because I’ve travelled outside the country before, but never with my family. We travelled to Cusco, we went to Machu Picchu and we could gain a lot of experiences and anecdotes. This was my best trip ever, and my third achievement.
Between my internship, travels and studies, I met again with my ex boyfriend and we couldn’t stand being separated so long, so we come back after being single like a year and a half. I know this is crazy and even a little scary, but we are happier than the first time, because we are older and more mature than we were before.
Also, I was supported a lot by my family and friends to do anything I want. Everybody believes in me and I’m feeling pretty well about it. I’m starting to quit smoking and practicing being a healthier person. I believe this will be my last and most important achievement.

I hope you’re doing fine too, tell me!

xoxo

All loving hero

Hi!
Today it’s free theme again, and in Chile we are in election time. We are choosing the next president of the country, senator, deputies and regional councilor in November 17TH . I’m not sure about the rest, but I do know who will be my chosen one for president. So, I’m going to write about my favorite candidate.
Remember that I told you about my “un-eco-friendly” lifestyle? Well, if you do, you’ll be surprised about who my favorite candidate is. Yes, you’re right. The person I’m talking about is Alfredo Sfeir.
I love to watch the debates on TV and listen to this wise man. I can’t believe how all the words he says makes so much sense. I can’t trust in any other candidate, and neither can listen to them seriously.
But let’s see the facts. Sfeir is an ecologist economist and a spiritual leader who worked in the World Bank since 1976 to 2009. Also, he founded the “Instituto Zambuling Para La Transformación Humana” (I don’t know what this is about, but it sounds awesome). Sfeir is always working in promoting human rights, protection and management of environment and world peace.
I remember once when a friend of mine told me her mother was defending the swans in Valdivia (because the Celulosa Arauco polluted a lake) and Sfeir was there too, doing it for his believes and expecting no appreciation. He is true.
Now, he has some campaign proposals like make a national program for small farmers, free education in all levels and the creation of the national organization of indigenous languages. He has so many more, and I think all of his proposals are necessary to make a better country.

About Films

Hi, today i’m going to write about my relationship with films. Well, I used to watch a lot of movies when I was an adolescent, I mean, classic movies like The Clockwork Orange, The Wall, The Shinning, and so many more.
I started watching movies when I was a child. I don’t remember when I watched my first movie, but I do remember a couple of them. I hadn’t a VHS player and neither cable TV. So, my only approach with movies was at the cinema.
I was living in Coquimbo, and I, my grandmother and my parents used to go and watch Disney movies. But not all of them, just the princesses’ films. I remember I watched Pocahontas, Mulan, and Cinderella. I watched movies like toy story just this year. And The Lion King I just watched yesterday by first time. Can you believe it?
Now I prefer TV series than movies, because I like the character’s development than just a couple of hours knowing a character. But when I do watch films, I always prefer something like girlie and family topics, beautiful art direction or auteur cinema.
For that reason, my favorite movies nowadays are almost all the films of Hayao Miyazaki,Sofia Coppola and Wes Anderson. I love the art of Miyazaki, and of course the stories and a culture very different of ours. What I love about Sofia Coppola films are the girlie topics like in Marie Antoinette, Lost in Translation and The Suicide Virgins. And talking about Wes Anderson, I’ve watched The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited and Life Acuatic, all of them just wonderful.
Which is your favorite movie?
See ya!

Sorry about that

I’M NOT ECO-FRIENDLY AT ALL. I think this is very embarrassing, but it is true. It’s strange because my mom is always keeping our environment clean and healthy, maybe I’m too lazy.
I think people learn about environmentally friendly practices at home. I mean, of course a good teaching at school is important, but without the family example, that school lessons would be worthless.
Nowadays I’m living alone at my apartment. Often this condos offer something like recycling programs (separating glass from plastic bottles), but I ignore those practices. I don’t know why, because I don’t follow any “un-eco-friendly” practices or theories, I have no foundations in what I do. I just think that my effort is not necessary for a better world.
Well (I’ll sound like a hermit) but I don’t leave my house so often. So, I rarely use some transport methods. But when I do, I always prefer public transport: it is cheap for students in Santiago (not like other parts of the country), I can travel long distances and I can take advantage of it and study while traveling. When I don’t use public transport, I use my legs because I hate bikers, they are so disrespectful!
Like you can notice, I don’t do anything to reduce my carbon footprint and I haven’t joined any eco-organizations. I think I can join other organizations, maybe for help homeless people, or defending some ideas that I agree with, but not with some environmental NGO.
Maybe, if we just use bikes, public transports or our legs, we are doing so much more for our environment than some big companies whose just pollute more than all the people living here.

Music

Hello classmates, Today it’s free theme again, so I’m going to write about me and the music I love. Well, when I was a child I listened music my mom liked. We could spend the whole day listening to Charly García, Víctor Jara, Violeta Parra and Inti Illimani.
Now, I can’t stand this music anymore. Maybe I decided to be a different person from my mom. So, when I was an adolescent I started to discovered music, but just the classics. I’m talking about Pink Floyd, Nirvana, The Beatles, I don’t know, bands that everyone knows.
But then, I went beyond and I realize there are a lot of cultures and music and I decided to listen all the new things my ears could stand. If you ask me about a favourite kind of music, I wouldn’t tell you which one I’ll choose. I’m comfortable listening reggaeton, salsa, classic rock, anything, because I think music is worth in every shape. Listening different kinds of music doesn’t bother me, but I really prefer to ear some artists, depending on the season.
Now I’m totally in love with Miranda! an Argentinean electro pop band. I listen to them when I do the house work, washing dishes and stuff like that (An advice: Miguel Bosé is really good for that too). For walking in the street, I always prefer strong music like Gogol Bordello, Die Antwoord, Balkan Beat Box, Daft Punk and funk music.
I hope you enjoy music as much as I do, and maybe we can talk about it!

Wildlife Photography at the 1800s*

Do you imagine being inside an ox to take a picture of some bird’s nests? This sounds unbelievable, because now we have a lot of modern equipment to take pictures and even film in 3D.
Well, those things weren’t available at 1890, but somebody had to do the hard work. To take good wildlife pictures, two Yorkshire brothers were willing to use strange methods, maybe really strange. It’s about Richard and Cherry Kearton.
These two brothers were able to get inside a fake ox; they converted a sheep into a pneumatic camera, they slept in trees, or even they built giant rocks to get inside and put the camera in a hole. The tried all these methods to hide and take pictures of natural life. They were interested in insects, birds and mammals.
Of course they suffered several damage, like back pain, attacks from seabirds, and a lot of falls. However, they took the firsts wildlife photographs with a cheap box camera. As time passed, they built more cameras, always keeping their singular style. Now, one of many Kearton brothers’ film camera has been bought for £4,000 by the National Media Museum in Bradford, England.
The camera belonged to Cherry Kearton, and it will be exposed in exhibitions of the war and wildlife photography, as a spokeman of the museum told to The Guardian.

Traveling

Hey there,
Well, we can write about anything today, but i’m out of ideas. So, I’m going to write about the same theme Belén wrote: My best holidays.
My family and I are always looking for spend good time together, take some rest from the work and studies and of course, meet new places. We just take this decision the last year, so the four of us had traveled to places like San Pedro de Atacama, Valle del Elqui and Cusco.
I traveled before with other people, to Argentina and Brazil. Those were pretty good experiences but I must say my favorite holidays ever is the one in Cusco with my family. They never went to another country before, so it was great for them.
In Cusco, we learnt a lot about history, Incas, Spanish soldiers and stuff. Also, we eat some new food like alpaca and cuy meat, it was delicious! We met awesome tourists during the trip and our hotel was just amazing.
I think the best thing we can do is travel around the world and meet new cultures. I always try to taste everything unknown for me, maybe do some extreme sports (like the time I tried tirolesa in Brazil). You must try it!

Mad Men

Hello mates!
Well, we have free theme now. So, I’m gonna talk about my favorite thing in the world: TV series. I really love the fiction programs,I’m always watching a lot of series like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Parks and Recreations and many more but my true favorite TV show is Mad Men.

Do you know Mad Men? Well, if you don’t, I can tell you about it. Mad Men is a drama series based in the New York of the 60s. There is an important advertising firm with the finest publicists in town. The main character is Don Draper, an extremely attractive man who is the biggest creator of all the campaigns an also, a person with serious past troubles. The series talk about him, his problems with alcohol, his relationships with women (a lot of women) and of course, with his coworkers and job.

I think the prettiest thing in Mad Men is the script. I mean, literally all the phrases in an episode are like, big quotes. But I can’t be unworthy of the great investigative work. The ambience, the props and scenery are just brilliant. I can perfectly imagine how would it be to live in the 60s America. In summary, Mad Men is the perfect radiography of a country and its specific historical facts. If you wanna know about the JFK’s death, Martin Luther King fight and Vietnam War, you should totally watch this show. 100% recommended.

Dreaming big

Hallo!
According to Google Translate, Hallo is a word that means hello in Afrikaans. Yep, Afrikaans is one of the languages you can speak in South Africa, the country I’d love to visit.

I started to have interest in South Africa since a few months ago. Well, of course before this I knew about Nelson Mandela, the Apartheid and stuff, but now, I can see South Africa like a real country, I mean, closer to me (not in history books).

I discovered a band called Die Antwoord, because a friend recommended me to listen them. I fell in love with them (you must listen them too!) and I decided to investigate more and more. I finished watching a lot of movies about South Africa, reading about the countercultures in the country and listening all the South African music I could find. I couldn’t enjoy more that beautiful country, its culture and history.

Of course I’d like to visit it and even live there if there is a chance. First, I’d like to go on vacations, finally meet the streets of Cape Town and forget about all the prejudices about Africans countries. Then, I’d like to study there. I don’t know anything about South Africans universities, but I’d like to investigate it and become a student of South African history. My impossible dream is to live in South Africa and from there, travel to know the whole African continent.

That’s all folks! See you next class.

Ideal job

This time,I’m going to write about my ideal job. I think you all will agree with me if I say that my ideal job is being pay for watch TV. But the truth is that I’ve never thought about it at all.
However, I’m studying journalism because I think I can find my ideal job in this area. I mean, if you are journalist, you can work in anything you like. Engineering, health, art, politics, I mean, literally anything.
Well, talking serious, when I grow up I’d like to be an important documentary filmmaker. I think is like write history with a camera. Maybe it’s no so difficult to find a job like this, but could it be hard to make good money and be a serious professional.
I don’t know if I would be good for this job, but I’m in love with it and maybe I could make it work. I think that a really good filmmaker would be responsible, patient and orderly, of course. You must be vigorous and know how to work in team.
This dream isn’t impossible. Maybe someday I will be reading my old blogs and I’ll find this and laugh about it.
See you!

My life this year

Hello there, mates,
Today, I'm going to talk you about me and the past semester. Well, to start, my name is Fernanda, I'm 21 years old and I live here, in Ñuñoa, Santiago. This is my fourth year at university and I'm about to graduate like a journalist (just one more year!).My birthday is in March, 26th,and I had the best celebrations I could ever imagine. I was just starting a new semester en my college and I was working in an important Chilean company, doing an internship.
Normally, I hate birthdays, I’m a really solitary person, but that day I enjoyed partying with my coworkers and friends. So, my life at that time (just a few months ago) was very busy, with my studies and my job, but it didn’t went to hard thanks to my friends. Yes, I didn’t have so many time to enjoy my hobbies (like watching tv series or go for a walk in this big city), but I worked hard and learnt a lot about making a good team and being responsible and persistent.
Well, now I’m being really lazy, enjoying my free time. But that’s other story.
See you next class!
